SUSTAIN (Milestones, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Spring 2002)
This feature explains how SUSTAIN has marshaled scientific, government and private expertise and resources in support of initiatives to alleviate iron deficiency in developing country populations. It highlights SUSTAIN’s efforts to remove technical impediments to the fortification of food staples with iron, and its research program to identify iron fortificants that are likely to be effective in improving iron status. The Foundation notes:
“By bridging the historically separate interests of private and public participants, SUSTAIN has become a quiet force behind food fortification efforts throughout Latin America.”
“SUSTAIN is continuing to advance the science of iron metabolism by rigorously studying currently manufactured iron powders, verifying which form best replenishes iron in malnourished populations, and how…bioavailability can be improved.”
