For many years, SUSTAIN organized
short-term activities in response to requests for assistance from developing
countries. These requests came from local businesses, organizations,
universities and educational institutions, USAID missions and other
international donors, host country governments, and others. SUSTAIN
staff carefully evaluated each request in consultation with expert volunteers
to determine the nature of the problem and the most appropriate type
of assistance. Assistance was offered in forms, including technical
consultations, technical assistance, assessments, workshops, or other
activities to best address the needs in the field.

Feasibility of Establishing Commercial (Private Sector) Food Testing
Laboratory Services
A SUSTAIN team assessed the feasibility of establishing a private food
testing laboratory to address food-borne illness, disease concerns and
to improve the competitiveness of Nepali food products in international
trade.
Hungary (November 1992).
Incubator Feasibility Assessment II
SUSTAIN completed the second of two assessments of the feasibility of
developing a center for technology commercialization and agribusiness
innovation in Hungary.
Guatemala (September 1992).
INCAP 40th Anniversary Conference
SUSTAIN offered presentations on product development,
marketing, food fortification, and quality assurance as a means of addressing
food & nutritional needs in Central America.

Incubator Feasibility Assessment I
SUSTAIN conducted the first of two assessments of the feasibility of
developing a center for technology commercialization and agribusiness
innovation in Hungary.
Guatemala and Honduras (July/August
1992). Extrusion and Flavor Technologies
A SUSTAIN team offered training
in the application of extrusion and flavor technologies at workshops
organized for technical managers of local food plants in Guatemala and
Honduras. The workshops were organized in collaboration
with INCAP and the Northern Honduras Chamber of Commerce (Intercham).

Pilot Plant Assessment
A SUSTAIN volunteer assessed INCAP's pilot
plant building and equipment and their potential for improvement.

Technical Assistance in the Manufacturing of Goat Cheese
A SUSTAIN volunteer provided technical assistance in processes for small-scale
production of goat cheese. Topics
included equipment sanitation, pasteurization, and processing of goat's
milk into cheese.
Illinois, U.S. (June 1992).
Participant Training Support
SUSTAIN sponsored a participant from Uganda to participate
in a short course on soybean processing at the University of Illinois and to attend
meetings in Washington, DC.
Honduras (June 1992).
Technical Assistance: GMP and Pickling
A SUSTAIN volunteer provided technical assistance to Fabrica Industrial
de Alimientos de Honduras in Good Manufacturing
Practices (GMP) and the pickling of vegetables.
Guatemala (May 1992).
Organic Marketing Workshop
A SUSTAIN volunteer led a seminar on the marketing of organic products,
presented in conjunction with a week-long AGTA (Guatemalan Association
of Food Technologists) seminar on marketing.

A SUSTAIN volunteer provided training and technical assistance on low-cost
methods of mycotoxin detection.

Program Planning with INCAP
SUSTAIN provided technical support to INCAP to help assess opportunities
for INCAP to market services to the Central American food industry in
such areas as product development, food safety and quality assurance.

A SUSTAIN team conducted an assessment of INCAP's institutional capacity
to work with the private sector to address food and nutrition challenges.
Nigeria (October 1991).
Low-Cost Weaning Foods Assessment
SUSTAIN assessed opportunities and constraints
associated with several private-sector firms entering the market for
low-cost weaning foods in Nigeria.
